What is HEIC?

If you have ever tried to open an iPhone photo on a Windows PC and been met with a blank icon or an error, you have encountered HEIC. The extension looks unfamiliar because it only became a default in 2017, when Apple switched every iPhone camera from JPEG to this newer format. The change saved storage space, but it also created the single most common file-compatibility headache in consumer photography.

The technical picture, briefly

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. The container uses the HEIF standard (High Efficiency Image Format, ISO 23008-12), and the actual compression inside is done by the HEVC codec — the same one used for 4K and 8K video. This is why the file is smaller: HEVC is a generation ahead of the JPEG codec, which dates to 1992. A typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo occupies about 1.5 to 2.5 MB as HEIC. The same shot as JPEG would be 3.5 to 6 MB. Roughly half the size for the same perceived quality.

HEIF is also more capable than JPEG as a container. It supports 10-bit colour (JPEG is limited to 8-bit), transparency, image sequences (Live Photos use this), and depth maps. Apple did not choose it arbitrarily — it was the only format that could hold everything a modern iPhone camera produces in a single file.

Where HEIC breaks

The problem is that HEVC is patent-encumbered. Any software that decodes it needs a licence. Apple pays for it on their platforms, so macOS and iOS handle HEIC natively. Everyone else has had to negotiate separately, and many have chosen not to.

This is why "convert HEIC to JPG" is one of the most common photo-related searches on the internet. The format works beautifully inside Apple's ecosystem and creates friction everywhere outside it.

Should you switch your iPhone back to JPEG?

You can. Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible will make the camera shoot JPEG again. But you are giving up real benefits: smaller files, 10-bit colour, and the ability to store Live Photos and depth data in a single container. If your photos rarely leave your Apple devices, there is no reason to switch. If you regularly send photos to Windows users or upload to platforms that reject HEIC, switching is the path of least frustration.

A middle approach: keep shooting HEIC for the quality and space savings, and convert individual files when you need to share them. iOS does this automatically when you AirDrop or email to a non-Apple device, though the automatic conversion is not always reliable in practice.

The future: AVIF

AVIF is the likely successor. It uses the AV1 codec, which is royalty-free — no licensing friction. Google, Mozilla, and most major browser vendors already support it. Apple added AVIF support in iOS 16. AVIF files are comparable in size to HEIC and sometimes smaller. The format is gaining ground quickly, and it may eventually make the HEIC compatibility problem obsolete. But that transition will take years, and in the meantime, JPEG remains the universal common denominator.

Converting

If you have a HEIC file that needs to be a JPEG right now, there are several methods ranging from built-in OS tools to browser-based converters. The one thing worth checking, whichever tool you use, is whether your photo is being uploaded to a server or processed locally. A photo you are converting because you need to share it with someone specific probably should not also be shared with the converter's operator. Browser-based local converters avoid that trade entirely.
